Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Why the name "Christus Victor?"
In Revelation 5, the Ancient of Days is seated on the throne with a scroll in His right hand containing sovereign decrees for the fulfillment of God's plans and purposes concerning these last days.  A strong angel proclaims with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?"  And no one in heaven or earth was able to open the scroll or to look at it.

The Apostle John weeps.  But one of the elders said to him, "Do not weep.  Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."

Through His life, death, and resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ prevailed.  He conquered sin and death and now reigns until all His enemies are made His footstool.

He is Christ the Conqueror; Christ the Overcomer.  He is Christus Victor.

What is the significance of the Lion?
In the Lion we something of the person and work of Jesus Christ.  He is the Lion from the tribe of Judah.  For example, when C.S. Lewis was looking for a Christ-like figure for his Chronicles of Narnia series, he chose "Aslan," a Turkic boy's name that means "lion."  Aslan the Lion is the savior king.

All those who are united to Jesus Christ through faith receive His imputed righteousness.  Justified in the sight of God, they are "bold as a lion" (Proverbs 28:1).

Christian Distinctives

Is Christus Victor associated with a particular church or denomination?
Christus Victor is an independent, board-directed school that maintains an accountable relationship to its founding church (Cornerstone Orlando).  Cornerstone Orlando is a reformed baptist church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith.
Do you have to be a Christian to attend Christus Victor?
At least one parent must be a professing Christian committed to living according to the faith that they profess.  They must be able to sign a summary statement to that effect.
Why do parents sign a commitment form?
We believe that faithfulness and excellence in education begins with a vital partnership between your family and our team of educators and administrators.  That partnership involves a shared devotion to Jesus Christ, a common philosophy of education, and a mutual commitment to goals and methods.  By signing the form, the parent is expressing that they are willing and prepared to enter that partnership with Christus Victor for the benefit of their child.
How is theology taught at Christus Victor?
We don't simply provide a Christian environment for an otherwise 'neutral' education.  Good theology is woven into the fabric of everything we do.  Because truth finds its origin in the One who created all things, education is characteristically theological.

Classical Distinctives

Why Latin?
Latin is a foundational skill with benefits that are often only fully realized much later in a student's course of study.  Latin helps students to understand how language works.  It trains and disciplines the mind by requiring analysis, precision, and attention to detail.  Latin is an inflected language and so provides an excellent foundation for studying biblical Greek.  Latin is the basis for the Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian) and so provides a foundation for becoming multilingual.

Latin will improve a student's vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, reading, understanding, and access to literature.  It is a master key, so to speak, that will enable a student to master other skills and subjects.
Why classical education vs. other learning models?
Among many reasons, classical education engages the student in one of three "natural" stages in a child's development.  We know these stages as the classical Trivium: grammar, dialectic (logic), and rhetoric.   Grammar is emphasized in the early years of a student's education and provides the necessary foundation.  Dialectic requires critical thinking and builds on that foundation as students reason with what they learn.  Rhetoric involves applying the use of knowledge and reason in engaging, teaching, or persuading others.

The Trivium might well be compared with the Bible's emphasis on knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.  These are essential tools of learning that focus not merely on what to think, but how to think; tools that may be effectively applied in life to any subject that a lifelong student may encounter.

Admissions

How long does the admissions process take?
Much will depend on the pace you prefer.  On average, the admissions process should take about two weeks.
Why are we asked to post a bond?
The Legacy Bond Program is a way that our community works together to build Christus Victor and establish a legacy of Classical Christian Education for future generations of students and their families.  The Program allows Christus Victor to build buildings, make improvements to existing structures, and maintain, improve, or expand our property.  This bond program is vital for meeting phased construction goals and implementing future property improvement plans.
How can I afford the tuition?
Considering our indexed tuition program, the various scholarships available, and Florida School Choice initiatives, Christus Victor will likely be extremely affordable to most families.  There is flexibility intentionally built into our tuition structure.  Please contact our admissions office for assistance.
What should I expect at the Interview with the Head of School?
We believe that excellence in education begins with a vital partnership between your family and our team of educators and administrators.  That partnership involves a shared devotion to Jesus Christ, a common philosophy of education, and a mutual commitment to goals and methods.  The interview is designed to explore the feasibility and potential effectiveness of that partnership to determine if Christus Victor is right for you.

Academics

What standardized tests do students take?
To be determined.
What curriculum do you use at Christus Victor?
Christus Victor will not use a standard market curriculum.  Rigorous educational objectives will be determined in the western liberal arts tradition and we will pursue development of the best curriculum to achieve those objectives.  We will utilize the best possible resources and materials to provide an industry-leading education for our students.
How rigorous is the course of study at Christus Victor?
A balanced education at Christus Victor is intended to challenge our students and students are certainly up to the challenge.  A rigorous academic experience not only teaches, but cultivates discipline and skills required for success in college, on the job, and in life.  "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might" (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Matthew Henry commenting on this text says, "What good we have an opportunity of doing we must do while we have the opportunity, and do it with our might, with care, vigour, and resolution, whatever difficulties and discouragements we may meet with in it. Harvest-days are busy days; and we must make hay while the sun shines."
When will additional grades be added at the school?
As soon in the will of God as we are able to add them.  Our desire is to provide a full pre-K through 12th grade option for a classical Christian education.

The Student Experience

Why school uniforms?
There are many reasons.  According to the Bible, God is concerned with what we do, or do not communicate via the clothes or accessories that we wear.  In many circles, that expression is governed or trained for the purpose of communicating something valuable to those inside the circle and to those outside the circle (in the military, for one notable example).

School uniforms have a similar purpose.  Our school is another circle concerned with what is expressed or communicated both inside the circle and outside.  The school uniform is a means of communication and expression.

For many young people today, their clothing is a mode of expression that is almost entirely governed by the world.  They are wearing a 'uniform' too.  At Christus Victor, we are going to communicate differently.
